Ongoing Cybersecurity Incident
Updated March 15, 2024

  • A ransom was demanded by the cyber criminals but the City of Hamilton did not pay it.

  • There is no evidence that personal information has been compromised.

  • The City is now transitioning from the containment phase (now complete) to the rebuilding and restoring phase. Timing to a complete recovery is difficult to estimate, but some portions of the recovery will likely take weeks and months. Recovery and rebuilding will help support internal operations with the goal of making even more City services available as quickly and securely as possible.

  • The City is working to bring more City Services online safely and as quickly as possible. Priority will be on restoring financial transaction capabilities (for the public, staff, vendors etc.)

  • Regarding paying City employees: employee base pay has continued during the cyber security incident. Payment for overtime will resume during the upcoming pay cycle.

  • The City continues to collaborate with cyber experts and authorities at various levels. Part of their work includes ongoing forensic analysis of the criminals’ activity within our systems.

  • The list of service disruptions and updates is available on our website www.hamilton.ca/cyberincident. It is being updated regularly as restoration progresses The Customer Contact Centre is operational and able to take phone calls from residents at 905-546-CITY.

  • Once the systems are fully restored, the City will work with its advisors on any additional measures that will help prevent this from happening in the future.

On February 15, 2024, Council approved a 5.79% average increase for the residential property tax levy. I'll be issuing a full newsletter on the topic, but in the meantime, here is a graphic overview. You can read more at hamilton.ca/budget2024
